Road Race Report 2025

Riders Eye View
“The men’s race followed the usual pattern on this circuit whereby the first few laps were run at high speed, therefore preventing any real gaps appearing. Whilst there were numerous attempts to break free, the majority of these attacks going to barely a handful of seconds before they were reeled back in again. The lack of any real wind also meant that for most it was easy to sit in and conserve energy for latter part, something I was doing TBF!

It’s devastating to have to have to report that crash mid race took down 10+ riders after a rear wheel unexpectedly worked it’s way loose and the sudden deceleration caused chaos, with several ride ending injuries and lots of bumps and scrapes. Happy to say that all the guys we managed to check in with post treatments are discharged to heal up and we hope that doesn’t take too long. Randomly another errant wheel nearly caused an incident earlier in the race as well, nothing like this has been heard of in the many running’s of this race over the years and then two together!

The pointy end of the race composed themselves and the strong breakaway held out to settle affairs among themselves as follows:-

1st – Finn Mason Hubo-Scott Cycling Team (£125 Pactimo Voucher & trophy)
2nd – Joshua Ravn Wold Top Pactimo (£100 Pactimo Voucher)
3rd – Toby Tanfield Leadout Peformance (£75 Pactimo Voucher)
4th – Kyle Houston Alba Rosa Cycling Club (£50 Pactimo Voucher)
5th – Jack Lucas Spectrum Racing (£25 Pactimo Voucher)
Highest place cat 4 – Dan McKenzie Liverpool Century RC (£100 Pactimo Voucher & trophy)

Womens Cat 3/4

20 heroes lined up (6 D.N.S.) for the Women’s 3/4 including several first time racers and we always love to see that.

Riders Eye View

“A steady neutralised start turned into a big surge to get things moving on the opening stretch. Light rain just before the start meant slightly damp roads and some cautious corners on the first lap, but conditions quickly dried up. The group stayed tight, working reasonably well and safely together. A few women stayed at the front of the race leading things for the first few laps before others fortunately jumped in to share some of the load. The straight along Bishopdyke road after the first corner saw a big slow-up in the group on lap 3 as the initial adrenaline settled and everyone started assessing their positions.
On lap 4 a big surge after the corner turning onto Scalm Lane stretched the group out, but everyone grouped back together before the next turn. A couple more brief surges were made up the slopes, but the group stayed tight the whole way round. By lap 7 it was clear the race was going to be made on the final sprint, and no big moves were made by anyone on the final lap as legs were being saved. As the group turned the final corner, Meg Boyd immediately made a repeat of her amazing sprint finish from 2023, leaving the rest of the group in the dust with a 2 second margin to take the win. The rest of the group jostled in a choppy sprint with me (Kat) moving up from near the back of the pack into second position, but overtaken with a well timed strong sprint from Isabella Torie who took the silver. The whole bunch crossed the line within 3 seconds of each other. A solid performance and great demonstration of women’s racing from everyone!”

So, a very mixed day of emotions from the racing incident in the Open to the elation at the clubs success in the Women’s, reminding us the roller-coaster that is road racing is seldom a straight forward journey and it’s complexities and energy both captivate and humble the viewer.

Very grateful for the invaluable help of our own club volunteers for marshalling, driving, catering etc etc and the Accredited Marshals and Com’s without whose collective efforts there would be no race ….and to our amazing Sponsor Pactimo for providing such a great prize pot of nearly £1,000 for the second year running. Thank you for supporting amateur racing, it means the world to us as organisers and to the racers!

See you all in 2026… Helen & Craig 🙂
