Seacroft Wheelers was formed in 1975 to cover a gap in the local club scene. While experienced riders were welcomed by most established clubs very few were willing to take on new and, especially, younger cyclists.
Founder members were our current club president Barbara Penrice, one man and five boys aged between 10 and 15, with membership blossoming to over 50 in just two months. Although the emphasis was on clubruns and enjoyment of cycling, racing was soon introduced and of the five young founder members three went on to international status.
Like all clubs it has experienced ups and downs but through the 1980s it became one of the foremost clubs in Yorkshire with a large membership, well supported runs and several top racing men and women in all aspects of the sport.
In 1983 three of our riders won the national juvenile 10 mile championship team award. Since then many of our members have figured highly in track, road, time trial and cyclo cross events including National Champions and successes at international level. But regardless of ability we have always encouraged all our riders by promoting over 20 club events every year.
Although centred around the east of Leeds members can hail from all parts of the region - we even have a long standing member riding with great success in the 'Seacroft' colours on the Irish road racing scene.
Our aims are still the same after 32 years, to promote all aspects of cycling for all abilities, with particular emphasis on youth, for without them cycling and cycle sport will cease to exist and a particularly enjoyable and healthy way of life will have been lost to the young.
Why should I join a cycling club?
Whether youre a complete beginner or already an experienced cyclist there is lots to be gained by joining a club. Cycling clubs form the basis of cycling and cycle sport in Britain. Youll have the company and support of like minded friends who enjoy the benefits of a healthy outdoor activity. Theres a year round programme of events and the opportunity to try different aspects of cycling. As a beginner youll learn skills and roadcraft more quickly by riding with club cyclists. Youll probably discover parts of the countryside you didn't know existed and youll certainly become much fitter as a result.
If youre already a competent cyclist then club cycling gives you the chance to develop your abilities further, perhaps competitively as part of a racing team, or simply just tackling more adventurous rides, on or off road with other enthusiasts.
The club is affiliated to all the sport's main governing bodies, which will enable you to particate in cycle racing should you wish to do so.
